Polar wind

The polar wind is a continuous flow of thermal plasma escaping from the terrestrial ionosphere at high latitudes along geomagnetic field lines. The polar wind consists mainly of H+, He+ and O+ ions and electrons.

The light ions can reach velocity higher than 10 km/s. The polar wind outflow varies with season, solar cycle and geomagnetic activity.
